Robotic sewer patrol, protecting our environment

Robotic sewer patrol, protecting our environment

Pipebot Patrol is a £1.8m project funded by the Ofwat Water Breakthrough Challenge, that will develop, build and test an autonomous sewer robot that lives in the sewer, constantly inspecting and raising alerts to the precise location of blockages, as they are beginning to form. This proactive approach will allow water and sewerage company maintenance teams enough time to plan and then react before sewer flooding occurs – keeping sewage where it belongs.

Pipebot patrol presents 3 completely new concepts in sewer flooding avoidance:

  • The mobile sensor
  • Patrolling all the time
  • Locating and alerting us to pending blockages

We are now designing and building the world’s first autonomous robot that actually lives in the sewer for 30 days at a time.

Goals

Early Detection of Blockages

  • Deploy a robot capable of identifying blockages in their early stages to prevent overflows and service disruptions.
  • Utilize advanced sensors and real-time data to provide predictive maintenance insights.

Enhanced Sewer Network Efficiency

  • Optimize operational workflows by reducing the frequency and cost of manual inspections.
  • Improve network performance by addressing issues proactively rather than reactively.

Autonomous Operation

  • Transition from a tethered system to a fully autonomous robot capable of navigating the sewer network independently.

Environmental Impact

  • Reduce environmental risks associated with sewer overflows and blockages.
  • Support sustainable wastewater management practices.

Significance

Pipebot Patrol is a game-changer in the field of sewer management, offering:

Proactive Maintenance

  • Shifting from reactive problem-solving to predictive management reduces the frequency of emergency repairs and service disruptions.

Improved Safety

  • Minimizing human exposure to hazardous environments by deploying robots for inspection and monitoring.

Cost Savings

  • Lowering operational costs by reducing reliance on manual inspections and emergency interventions.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Mitigating the impact of blockages on local communities and ecosystems by addressing issues early.

Technological Advancement

  • Advancing the capabilities of robotic systems in sewer environments, paving the way for future innovations.

Scope

The Pipebot Patrol project encompasses:

Design and Development

  • Creating a robust robotic system capable of navigating and inspecting complex sewer networks.

Pilot Testing

  • Conduct trials in the lab before installation at selected zones to evaluate the robot’s effectiveness and refine its capabilities.

Deployment Infrastructure

  • Designing and implementing secure kiosks to house tethered systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Long-Term Automation

  • Transitioning to untethered robots to streamline maintenance and expand the system’s reach across larger networks.

Collaboration

  • Engaging with experts, industry leaders, and academic institutions to address technical challenges and ensure successful outcomes.

This funding allows us to progress robotic solutions to monitor sewers and minimise the possibility of sewer flooding to customer properties and environmental impact. Combining robotics, autonomy and acoustics with smart-sewer networks, we’re developing new tools for water companies to meet our performance commitments to reduce sewer flooding.
